A dental implant is a titanium artificial root placed in the jawbone where a tooth is missing. Once it has fused with the bone, a new tooth is made on top. The process has several stages.
1. Examination and planning
Your mouth is examined, and the amount of bone is assessed with X-rays and, when needed, a 3D CT scan. You will be asked about your general health and any medication you take.
2. Placing the implant
The procedure is done under local anaesthetic, and in most cases one session is enough. You will not feel pain during the procedure.
3. Healing
It usually takes a few months for the implant to fuse with the bone. A temporary tooth can be worn during this time.
4. The final tooth
Once the implant has fused, an impression is taken and the final tooth is made on the implant.
Afterwards
Implant teeth need brushing and cleaning between the teeth just like natural ones, along with regular check-ups.
Timings vary from person to person; your plan is set at your examination.
