Bleeding when you brush or floss is often the first sign of gum inflammation.
Common causes
- Plaque and tartar building up on the teeth
- Brushing too little or too hard
- Hormonal changes, such as pregnancy
- Some medicines and general health conditions
What to do
Don't stop brushing because of the bleeding. Keep brushing gently with a soft brush and keep cleaning between your teeth.
When to see a dentist
Book an examination if the bleeding lasts more than a few days, or if your gums are swollen or receding, or you notice bad breath. Caught early, a scale and clean plus good home care keep treatment short.
